Magazzino is happy to announce the new group exhibition TBT (To Be Titled, Turn Back Time), that will connotate the gallery’s spring and summer program. The exhibition will articulate in two parts, the first opening Friday 11 May 2018 and featuring works by Massimo Bartolini, Guillermo Galindo, David Schutter, Nicola Martini, Matteo Nasini e Namsal Siedlecki.
To Be Titled stems from the idea of a multi-voice dialogue between the works of three among the gallery’s artists (Bartolini, Galindo, Schutter) and three young Italian artists, not represented by Magazzino (Martini, Nasini, Siedlecki). The spontaneity that led the preparation of this exhibition is already evident from its title, which reveals the typical condition of expectation underlying the act of creation, and expresses within the exhibition’s discourse through a poetic of suspension, shared by many of the works on display.
Starting from the work that most imposes its presence over space, Corrimano by Massimo Bartolini, a delicate drawing/sculpture that delimits, protects, and defines a “beyond” immediately interrupted by the white wall, to the performative works by Guillermo Galindo and Matteo Nasini, the works exhibited start a reflection on their own condition, of being “final” and “finished” objects but still open to developments and a choral dimension. On one hand, the raw assemblages by Galindo, result of the collection of object subtracted from abandonment and witnessing a border, a crossing; on the other hand, the elegant sculptures by Matteo Nasini, algid and geometric shapes that objectify the brain activity during dreaming, thus solidifications of non-functional thought and memory processes. The painting by David Schutter, fluid expression of a philology of pictorial language – perception, gesture, memory of the image and its translation through layering – converse with the sculptures by Nicola Martini, animated by a inner and perpetual tension between rigidly opposed elements (horizontal/vertical, centrifugal/centripetal, solid/liquid) and which draw, challenging the limits of their own materials, a distant, atemporal and almost metaphysical landscape. This tension can also be found in Namsal Siedlecki’s works, where the artist uses an industrial process (the galvanic bath) on natural fibers and vegetals. Reflecting both on the physical and conceptual nature of the integument, Siedlecki attempts at creating a perennial protection, an attempt that doesn’t save the natural element from wasting, but rather defines a second skin aspiring to eternity.
TBT (To Be Titled, Turn Back Time) is a project curated by Gabriele Gaspari. The first exhibition will last until 15 June; the second one will be opening 21 June and last until 28 July 2018. Born in Mexico City in 1960. Lives and works in Vive Oakland (USA). The work of Guillermo Galindo rebounds the limits between music, performance and sculpture, including compositions for orchestra, instrumental works, sculptures, visual arts, flim, installations and live improvisation. The sculptures and scores by Galindo have been shown in several international exhibitions, among them documenta14 (2017), Pacific Standard Time (2017) e CTM Festival (2017). Moreover, his works have been broadcasted by BBC Outlook (London), Vice Magazine (London), RTS Switzerland, National Public Radio (U.S.), CBC (Canada), California Sunday Magazine (U.S), Reforma Newspaper (Mexico) , CNN and the New York Times.
Born in Florence in 1984. LIves and works in Milano. Matter and its overturns are, at the same time, the starting point and the climax of the artistic process of Nicola Martini. His work leans towards sculptural forms and installation, but its real specificity resides in the process behind the work. Martini operates the change of state of the inner materials of his works (resins, fibers, cements) through a direct or forced interaction or through the aid of chemical catalyzers. He has had solo shows at Museo Marino Marini (2012), at FRAC Champagne Ardenne (2011) and Viafarini, Milan (2011). His works has also been included in international group shows such as Intuition, Palazzo Fortuny, Venezia (2017), the 16th Quadriennale di Roma (2016) and Ennesima, Triennale di Milano, 2015.
Born in Rome in 1976. Lives and works in Rome. The research of Matteo Nasini starts from sound studies, to take physical shapes deeply examining and observing the sound and plastic substance’s surface. This leads to a practice that methodologically develops in sound installations, performances, audiovisual works and sculptural works.
